The dollar was mixed while stocks were initially slightly easier on Friday ahead of the holiday weekend as investors traders booked some profits while waiting on details of Donald Trump’s tax and spending plans although by the end of the session they were more or less back to flat. The main action was seen in Sterling, which tumbled after disappointing retail sales data for January, which unexpectedly dropped -0.3% mm versus expectation of a 1.0% rise. The metals and oil were rangebound.

This week is a little light on data and looks likely to be dominated by political developments from Washington. Today will get off to a quiet start, it being a US holiday – Presidents Day – so look out for any statements coming from that! The flash PMIs will be a focus in midweek, when we also get Central Bank Minutes from the RBA (Tue) and the FOMC (Wed), which will be closely scrutinised. There will be various central bank speakers through the week but there is little to come Thursday/Friday, and it could end up being rather a choppy few days.
